Abstract

1281346 Machinery guards BRITISH STEEL CORP 12 Jan 1970 [23 Oct 1968] 50312/68 Heading F2J A guard for protecting an operator during grinding or surface finishing of a powerrotated workpiece by a hand held grinding tool 31 comprises a tubular housing 10 of sufficient cross-section to accommodate the grinding tool 31 with its working face 32 projecting from the open end 11 of the housing, the housing being securable to a fixed machine part with the end 11 adjacent the workpiece, and shields 24, 25, 28 extending beyond the periphery of the housing 10 to protect the operator from adjacent rotating or dangerous parts. As shown, the workpiece is the commutator of a large dynamo-electric machine the guard being secured to a brush arm 21 of the machine by bolts 22 and a bracket 23. A wall 13 divides off part of the tubular housing to form a suction box 12 from which air is extracted via a line 30 to remove waste particles. Sealing strips 16 extend from the outer walls of the housing 11. The tool 31 has a handle 33 extending through a slot in a wall 36. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the upper end of the housing is completely closed and the tool 31 is manipulated by a remote control rod (38). The housing is of plywood.
