Abstract

1281301 Fire retardant rigid polyurethane foams CINCINNATI MILACRON Inc 13 Nov 1970 [13 Nov 1969] 54161/70 Headings C3C and C3R Fire retardant rigid polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting a composition comprising (1) an isocyanate terminated adduct obtained by reacting an aromatic polyisocyanate with a difunctional organic compound, (2) at least one polyether polyol having a functionality of at least 4 and which is the reaction product of an alkylene oxide with an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl and/or heterocyclic compound, (3) at least one organic compound having a M.W. of at least 500 which does not contain zerewitinoff active H atoms and which contains halogen and/or phosphorus atoms, at least one halogen atom being a bromine atom, or a mixture of halogen and/or phosphorus containing organic compounds, the mixture having an average M.W. of at least 500, which does not contain zerewitinoff active hydrogen atoms and comprising at least one bromine containing compound and (4) a blowing agent. The reaction may also take place in the presence of a urethane polymerization catalyst and/or a surfactant. The difunctional organic compound used to form the component (1) is suitably a polyether diol. Typical compounds (3) which may be used either alone or in specific combinations are tris-(2,3- dibromopropyl)phosphate, a commercial chloroethyl ester of phosphorous acid, tris(1-bromo, 3- chloroisopropyl)phosphate and hexabromocyclododecane. The reaction suitably takes place in a closed mould using an amount of foam-forming components at least twice that which would be required to completely fill the mould cavity if the foam was allowed to freeblow. In a typical example a prepolymer is prepared from polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate and a polyoxypropylene diol and mixed with a chloroethyl ester of phosphorous acid, the mixture being mixed with a polyol blend comprising tris(2,3- dibromopropyl)phosphate, poly(oxypropylated α-methyl glycoside-glycerol mixture, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethyl-1,3-butane diamine. The diacetate salt of N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethyl- 1,3-butane diamine, a dimethyl silicone-alkylene oxide copolymer, monofluorotrichloromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane to form a rigid foam.
