Abstract
1280395 Protecting guards WINGARD Ltd 19 April 1971 [11 April 1970] 17321/70 Heading B7B A vehicle safety device comprises a flexible restraining member which has one part attached to the vehicle roof and which is drawn tightly over a seat occupant by a lever actuated by power means in the event of an accident. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 1 the restraining member comprises a net 1 fixed at 3 to a roof part and whose front end is released from a pull-off connection 7 by pivoted arms 9 at opposite sides of the vehicle which are thrown rearwardly to draw the net 1 by means of flexible straps 8 tightly over the seat occupants. The flexible straps are attached to an anchorage 12 and pass through rollers 11 at the upper ends of arms 9 which are hollow. The arms may be actuated by mechanical, fluid pressure, or explosive power means operated by a deceleration sensitive means such as a pendulum. An additional restraining means comprises a webbing 13 which may be anchored at 14 to the inner side of each seat and attached to the upper end of an arm 9 to be thrown across the lap of the occupant. The power means may be manually actuated in the event of an accident being imminent. In another embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 the restraining member comprises a webbing 20 which is drawn across an occupant when a pin 42 is released from an arm 38 which is thrown forwardly by means of torsion bar 39, and rod 37 attached to lever 24 first pulls a frame 29 so that parts 47, 48 engage floor sill lugs 45, 36 and then pivots lever 24 which is thrown over rearwardly and retained in the operative position by engagement of a pawl 35 with a ratchet 31. The lever mechanism is carried by a frame 29 which is slidably and detachably mounted by means of pins and slots 43, 44 behind a pull-off panel 26 of the door trim Fig. 3. The lower end of the webbing carries a ring 23 which is engaged by a hook (33), Fig. 2 (not shown), which projects through an arcuate slot (34) in the door trim. The lever mechanism is duplicated on the other side of the vehicle. An addition webbing may be attached at its ends to the longer arms of the levers 24 on opposite sides of the vehicle.
