Abstract

1280375 Combustible gas ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 April 1971 [27 Jan 1970] 3824/70 Heading C5E An apparatus for converting S-containing heavy petroleum feedstock to H 2 , hydrocarbon gases and to light petroleum comprises three fluidized beds, 12, where the feed is converted to H 2 and gaseous hydrocarbons with coke deposition on the particles, 21, where the coke is at least largely burnt, and 40, where the particles are regenerated. The particles comprise CaO or precursors therefor, e.g. calcined limestone or dolomite, and temperatures in the beds must lie respectively in the ranges 500‹ to 700‹ C., 800‹ to 1000‹ C., and 1000‹ to 1100‹ C., bed 12 being supplied with steam at 14, bed 21, with O 2 , optionally with steam, at 23, and bed 40 with O 2 at 48. Tar and fines are recycled from a slurry trap 16 at 19 and vapours are passed to a fractionator 18 and condenser 62. Steam for propelling the particles between the beds is delivered at 33, 52, 54, 59, and the following control elements are provided:-temperature responsive 26, (for a diluent, e.g. steam or nitrogen) 49, 58; pressure-responsive 29, 30, 56; 37 responsive to CO 2 in off-gases 36; 45 responsive to SO 2 (or O 2 ) in off-gases from the bed 40; 61 responsive to H 2 S in the H 2 &c. mixture leaving bed 12, the element 61 actuating a valve 60 to dump particles from the bed 40; and 63, 64 which measure the head of particles in the bed 12 and actuate a hopper 66 for fresh particles. Feed-stock supply may be regulated by the temperature in the bed 12. The gases leaving the bed 21 at 36 may be suitable for ammonia synthesis, Fischer-Tropsch reactions, or for the water gas shift reaction to make H 2 .
