Abstract

1280291 Photographic type-composing INTERNATIONAL PHOTON CORP 17 July 1969 [25 July 1968] 35575/68 Heading B6W A character matrix strip 4, Fig. 1, is mounted on a continuously rotating drum 3 so that each character passes through two projection positions opposite flash tubes 7, 8 which are illuminated under control of a tape with timing controlled by a lamp 5, slits in the strip 4 and a photo-diode 6. The light is reflected by mirrors 9, 10 or prisms to lenses 11, 14 which are moved stepwise on carriages 12 so as to project the characters in line along a film 15, each tube and lens projecting alternate characters. The strip may carry two rows of characters, the row being selected by movable windows 22, 23. Alternatively, each tube and lens may project on one half of the line. The lenses 102, 104, Fig. 7, may be arranged one above the other, the light being directed to the desired plane by mirrors 106, 108, 110 and a beam splitter 112. Four lenses may be used, one for each quarter of a character disc. In another form, Fig. 10, two character discs 130, 132 each provide one projection position aligned with lens carriages 134, 136, and a beam splitter 138 is provided.
