Jackets and covers.-A tyre casing is built up from plies of a rubbered fabric 1 - - 6, Fig. 7, assembled as a flat band over an expansible drum 13, the edges of the band being turned over to form the tyre beads (with or without endless retaining-wires 17) and the band shaped to arched cross-section by the application of a lateral pres. sure at the edges and outward radial pressure at the intermediate portion. The fabric layers of which the cover is built up consist of parallel threads held together by unvulcanized rubber, or by a weak weft thread at intervals. Strips of such fabric with the threads arranged obliquely are laid successively on the mandrel, with the threads of adjacent layers crossed, and to provide for even tension in the threads, the fabric strips are cut at graded angles to compensate for the increasing cross-section of the cover during the building-up process. Fig. 16 shows (approximate. ly) the necessary variation in the obliquity of the threads in the layers 1 - - 6 of a 36in. by 4¢in. cover having threads .04in. thick on a rubber backing. 007in. thick. As shown in Fig. 7, the layers are assembled with separating-strips 15, 16 between adjacent pairs, the edges of which are stepped to form a graded thickening and folded over. The retaining wires 17 may be omitted, but in any case the strips 15, 16 are removed as the succeeding pairs 1, 2, &c. are folded over. Fig. 10 shows a section of the finished cover, including additional fabric and rubber insertions 8, 11 and 7, 10 respectively, and rubber tread 12<a>.
