Abstract
1279722 Portable fire protection system FENWAL Inc 20 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 51416/69 Heading A5A A fire protection system includes one or more portable suppressor units each comprising a portable base on which are integrally mounted a container of fire extinguishant, an electrically activated actuator therefor, and means for detecting an abnormal condition in the zone under risk, the actuator and the detection means being connected by an electrical control circuit so that discharge of extinguishant is actuated automatically on detection of an abnormal condition. In a preferred embodiment, each suppressor unit 12 comprises a hollow extendible mast 24 providing fluid communication between extinguishant tank 21 and discharge head 29. The unit consists of portable housing 18 with handles 19 in which are mounted tank 21, mast assembly 24, circuit housing 34, and battery 37. Tank discharge tube 23 is connected to assembly 24 by valve unit 25, which is preferably activated by an electrically energised explosive squib 39. The mast comprises sections 26 coupled at 27, and upper section 28 on which is mounted discharge head 29 having orifices 31 and with fire detector 32 supported thereon. The detector may be smoke, heat or impact-responsive. Circuit box 34 carries control and indicator panel 35, and has connections to battery 37, detector 32, explosive squib 39, and to plug 36 and plug receptacle 38 by which suppressors 12 can be connected in series. One end unit 12 in the series can be connected to a ramp alarm station. Extinguishant 20 can be water, a dry chemical, or preferably a liquefied halohydrocarbon gas, e.g. CBrF 3 .
