Abstract

1279201 Exercising apparatus J D BROOKE and M S FIRTH 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970] 10262/70 Heading A6M An apparatus for measuring human physical work, or for exercising purposes, in which a magnetic field applies a retarding force to a metal member passing through it, has a disc 3 rotated in the magnet field of a pair of magnets, or a horseshoe magnet 6, the disc being of alumium or of copper and the amount of it in the magnetic field being variable by movement of the magnet or magnets 6 (on a pivoted base 7). A calibrated scale on a member 2b to which a link for moving the magnet is attached shows the degree to which the disc is in the magnetic field. The disc is driven through a chain 20 from a sprocket 19 mounted in place of the rear wheel of a bicycle. A speedometer (not shown) on the bicycle indicates the pedalling rate.
