Abstract

1278889 Gas turbine jet engine - select combustion control MOTOREN-UND TURBINENUNION MUNCHEN GmbH 18 Sept 1970 [11 April 1970] 44691/7C Heading F1J A gas turbine jet engine is provided with an afterburner also with a variable area jet nozzle, the engine having control apparatus which is effective to vary the area of the jet nozzle as desired, also fuel control means responsive to a signal from the nozzle actuating device to increase or decrease the fuel supplied to the afterburner in dependence on the actual area of the nozzle. The engine shown comprises a jet pipe 7 in which is disposed afterburner equipment comprising fuel manifolds 23, 24, 25 and flame stabilizing gutters 26, 27, 28. A variable area nozzle comprising pivoted flaps 10 is mounted at the downstream end of the jet pipe. The engine is controlled by a throttle lever 11 which controls supply of fuel to the engine combustion equipment 3, 4 through a fuel control unit 13. When the throttle is moved beyond the position a for example to the positions 21 or 22 a signal is transmitted through line 33<SP>1</SP> and electronic control unit 34<SP>1</SP> and lines 35, 36 to nozzle actuator 37 which acts through linkage 38 to open the jet nozzle 10. Simultaneously a signal is transmitted from actuator 37 through lines 39, 40, 41 to afterburner fuel control unit 32 which controls supply of fuel to afterburner 23, 24, 25 in dependence on the actual area of the jet nozzle. A signal dependent on certain engine parameters is supplied through lines 43, 44 to a further control unit 45 which acts to vary the nozzle area in the event of any difference between the nominal and actual values of one or several engine parameters, a signal passing from control unit through line 46 to summation point 47 in line 35, 36. A signal from line 43 is also passed to afterburner fuel control unit 32. When throttle lever 11 is moved to afterburner range, fuel is injected through burners 48, 49 in the main combustion equipment so as to cause an afterburner ignition flame which is sensed and a signal passed through line 52 to control unit 34<SP>1</SP> which acts to unlock the nozzle actuator 37. In the event of afterburner flameout the signal in line 52 is cancelled and the nozzle is restored to its minimum area position.
