Abstract

1278806 Octadienes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Oct 1970 [17 Oct 1969 28 April 1970 27 July 1970] 51151/69 20368/70 and 36198/70 Heading C5E 1,6- and/or 1,7-octadienes are prepared by contacting one or more acylic conjugated diolefins with Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Os or a compound thereof in a polar solvent in the presence of a reducing agent. The reaction, presumably a dimerization and selective hydrogenation, may be effected at 20-200‹ C. The reducing agent may be gaseous H 2 but is preferably a liquid miscible with the solvent such as hydrazine, formaldehyde, a lower alcohol or, preferably, formic acid. Suitable catalysts are the chlorides, carboxylates and complexes of Pt and Pd. The preferred solvent is DMF. Examples describe the preparation of 1,6- and 1,7-octadiene from butadiene; 3,7-dimethyl octadiene-1,6 from isoprene; and 3-methyl octadiene-1,6 from a mixture of butadiene and isoprene Vinyl cyclohexane is formed as a by-product in some of the examples. When effected in a stainless steel reactor a copper salt or a phosphine may be added as catalyst promoter.
