Abstract

1278801 Jet propulsion nozzles ROLLSROYCE Ltd 17 June 1970 [19 June 1969] 30997/69 Heading F1J The invention relates to a jet propulsion nozzle for a gas turbine engine, the nozzle comprising a series of adjustable flaps each flap being connected to an axially-movable shroud which surrounds the flaps, axial movement of the shroud resulting in pivotal movement of the flaps. The nozzle shown comprises a series of flaps 14 pivotally mounted at 15 at the downstream end of a jet pipe 11, the flaps being of V-shape as shown in Fig. 3 and auxiliary flaps 16 sealing the gaps between adjacent flaps 14. Each flap 14 is provided externally with a cam member 23 which is engaged by a roller 24 carried by an axially-movable shroud member 30, the shroud being movable by actuators 22. The shroud 30 is formed with walls 31 which terminate in a ring member 33, the walls 31 being of polygonal form. Each cam 23 and roller 24 is enclosed within a fairing 32, see Figs. 4 and 5a. When the flaps 14 are disposed in the maximum nozzle area position Fig. 4, the flaps lie parallel to the walls 31 and the base drag area C is a minimum. In Fig. 6 a wall 34 is disposed adjacent the wall 31 and is operable by a link 37 such that when the flaps 14 are in the maximum nozzle area disposition the wall 34 extends to the end of the wall 31 but as the shroud 30 is moved upstream causing the flaps 14 to move to the minimum nozzle area position the wall 34 extends downstream of the downstream end of the wall 31 whereby the base drag area is reduced from that indicated at E to that indicated at D.
