Abstract

1278594 Holography R C A CORPORATION 10 Sept 1969 [20 June 1968] 29582/68 Heading G2J Signal-to-noise ratio of holograms is improved by increasing the proportion of the object beam polarized parallel to the reference beam and decreasing the proportion of the object beam polarized orthogonal to the reference beam. In one embodiment a reference beam 16 of plane polarized light is expanded to form a beam 20 and illuminates a hologram plate 22. An object beam 18 from the same light source is passed through a diffuser 28 to render it randomly polarized and then through a linear polarizer 30 to pass substantially only that portion polarized parallel to the reference beam 20 thereby cutting out that portion of the beam which carries only noise. The beam is then passed through a transparency and a hologram 22 is formed with improved signal-to-noise ratio. In an alternative embodiment the object beam directly illuminates an object without either diffuser or linear polarizer, but a quarter-wave plate oriented at 45 degrees to the plane of polarization of the reference beam is introduced into that latters' path to circularly polarize the reference beam. If the object has a plane polarizing effect upon an incident beam then a coherent light source forming randomly polarized beams may be used.
