Abstract

1278413 Coated particles DENTAL FILLINGS Ltd 18 July 1969 [23 July 1968] 35020/ 68 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions Cl and C3] A finely divided silica or silicate filler for use in dental fillings (see Division C3) is coated first with a vinyl-silane primer and then with an acrylic polymer. Suitable fillers include quartz, fused siliceous materials such as dental porcelain and silicate glasses, e.g. beta-eucryptite and pyrocerams, and dental silicate cement powders, particularly those obtained using a metal fluoride flux and having a composition (by weight): silica 32-42%; alumina 21-36%; trisodium or tricalcium phosphate 6-16%; and calcium fluoride, sodium fluoride or sodium, aluminofluoride 13-35%. The vinylsilane primer used is one capable of copolymerising with an acrylate or methacrylate monomer and is suitably a compound of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is an acrylyl, methacrylyl or crotonyl group, R 2 is an alkylene group having up to 4 C atoms, and R<SP>3</SP> is an alkyl group having up to 4 C atoms. The acrylic polymer is then coated on the filler; the polymer may be preformed and applied from solution or an acrylic monomer may be polymerised in situ on the filler. The preferred acrylic polymer is polymethyl methacrylate.
