Abstract

1278256 Folding and delivering paper; cutting and gumming apparatus TIMSONS Ltd 8 Sept 1969 [25 July 1968] 35444/68 Heading B8R A plurality of superposed paper webs R are drawn by rollers 1 and 2 over a longitudinal folding plate 3, cut transversely at 4 to form individual signatures S and then passed to a delivery device. Gumming apparatus.-Gum is applied along the middle line of each web before it comes into contact with an adjacent web, by pipes 9 supplied from gum troughs 11. In this manner signatures S are provided with gummed spines. Associating apparatus.-Paper webs R may have been produced by longitudinally slitting wider webs, the slit portions being collated by passage around diagonally disposed diverting bars or rollers (not shown). Folding apparatus.-The folding plate 3 may be pivotable along line 3a to permit variation of the angle at which the face of the plate is set. Pinch rollers 12 and 13 complete the fold. Cutting apparatus.-The superposed and folded webs are severed transversely by a rotary knife 5 which co-operates periodically with a fixed knife 4. Alternatively, the cutting may be effected by a pair of co-operable cylinders furnished respectively with one or more cutting blocks and a knife. Delivery apparatus.-The signatures are gripped between fast tapes 15 and 16, moved into the horizontal plane around curve 14 and forwarded to slower moving tapes 18 and 19. Tape 18 co-operates with a trap roller 17 which assists formation of an overlapping stream. The signatures are stacked on conveyer 21 against retaining member 22, which member, after delivery of a predetermined number of signatures is pivoted (dotted position) to release the stack for further delivery. Pivotable fingers 25 hold back subsequent signatures whilst a completed stack is removed. Jogger plates 23 align the stack.
