Abstract

1278156 Manufacture of glass sealed magnetic reed contact units PLESSEY CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [26 June 1970] 31049/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] In the manufacturing process for sealed magnetic reed contact units a first contact member 2 is supported at one end by a support member 6 so that its longitudinal axis is vertical and then a second contact member 1 is magnetically supported on the first contact member by energization of a coil 7 whilst a further removable magnetic field is established in the vicinity of the second contact member 1 for maintaining the contact alignment during subsequent steps in manufacture. Said further magnetic field may be provided by a unit 8 having a coil 8b and magnetic parts 8a, 8c, and pivotable about an axis X-X to allow the glass tube 9 to be placed over the reeds before sealing to the reeds. The' tube is first sealed to the second contact member 1 before the magnetic fields are removed so that the contact gap can be set before the tube is sealed to the first contact member 2. The unit 8 may have a permanent magnet instead of a coil. The contact areas of the reeds 1, 2, may be subjected to infra-red radiation during tube sealing or separately to change the characteristics of a contact coating thereon (e.g. so as to anneal, diffuse or outgas the coating). If the apparatus is arranged so that the support member 6 is at the top and the unit 8 is at the bottom there is an improvement in the shape and strength of the seals at the ends of the tube 9 of the finished contact unit. Sealing may be effected in a sealed housing containing a gas to be enclosed in the tube 9.
