1277322 Winding and reeling WHEELING-PITTSBURGH STEEL CORP 9 Sept 1970 43134/70 Heading B3E Apparatus for coiling metal bands comprises a framework 1, 2, a reel 13 on each side of the framework rotatable on vertical axes, means for driving the reels, a pair of vertically movable laterally spaced rails 23 between said reels, a rear roller 24 mounted on a vertical axis on each of the rails behind the adjacent reel and provided with a groove for receiving a metal band 25, an arm 27 extending forward from each roller, a front roller 28 on the end of the arm adjacent each reel also having a groove, an intermediate roller 30 carried beside the front roller on the arm for engaging the opposite side of the adjoining band and means for raising and lowering said rails continuously at a uniform rate to spool the bands on the reels. Each reel is driven from chain and sprocket gearing by an hydraulic driving unit 18. The rollers 24 and 28 have adjustable collars to accommodate different sizes of band. The rails and the rollers carried by them are reciprocated by double-acting hydraulic cylinders 31 (Fig. 5) the piston rods being attached to the rails by racks 35 which engage pinions 36 mounted on a common shaft 37 so that each end of the rails move together. The flow of hydraulic fluid to and from the cylinders 31 is controlled to raise and lower the rails continuously at a uniform rate by means of a metering pump driven by a chain and sprocket drive 50 (Fig. 9) from the reel shaft 12. Consequently the speed of reciprocation of the rails will depend on the speed of rotation of the reels. A counterbalance valve 52 ensures that the pistons move upwardly and downwardly at the same speed. The reels pull the bands on edge through a separator 62 located after pinch rolls 63, 64 the upper roll of which has an air-operated solenoid controlled drag brake 65. Brakes are also provided on the pinion shaft 37.
