1277104 Cleaning brushes JOHNSON FAST PRINT MACHINE CORP 29 July 1969 38099/69 Heading A4F A method of washing and thereafter quickly drying a rotatably mounted brush comprises directing jets of washing liquid against the periphery of the brush at constant high-pressure simultaneously to rotate the brush at high speed and to wash it, and cutting off the supply of washing liquid abruptly without first substantially reducing its pressure, thereby leaving the brush rotating at high speed to dry. Apparatus for performing the method comprises a hydraulic piston 22 arranged to be reciprocated in a cylinder 10 to drive, via coupled piston-rods 23, 43, a piston 42 in a cylinder 12 having a single inlet and outlet port 52. In one direction of movement of the piston 42 washing liquid is drawn from a reservoir 54 into the cylinder 12, and in the opposite direction of piston movement washing liquid is discharged via the opening 52 and nozzles 68 on a header 56 on to the periphery, of a brush 72. mounted for rotation in a base 76. When the piston 42 reaches the end of its forward stroke the discharge ceases abruptly and the brush 72 continues to rotate to dry. The length of the piston stroke is variable by adjustment of a switch 50 relatively to an actuator 46 carried by the coupling 44 between the piston-rods 23, 43. The actuator 46 opens the switch 50 on striking it thereby closing solenoid valves 30, 40 and opening solenoid valves 32, 38 to reverse the movement of the piston 22.
