Abstract
1276994 Change-speed control DAIMLERBENZ AG 19 April 1971 [29 Jan 1970 27 Feb 1970] 20360/71 Heading F2D A motor-vehicle floor mounted gear-shift lever 1 is arranged to retract in its axial direction into the gear casing or propeller-shaft tunnel in the event of an accident to avoid injuries to occupants of the vehicle which a normally non-retractable gear lever can inflict. As shown, the gear lever 1 has a lower ball end 2 engaged in a pot-shaped rubber or synthetic plastics bearing 3 retained in a journal pin 4 serving as a guide for a shift tube in the usual manner, the lever 1 being connected to a support 6 by synthetic plastics shear pins 5, the arrangement being such that if the lever 1 is loaded by a heavy axial thrust from above, the pins 5 will shear and the bearing 3 will deform and separate from its mounting so that the lever 1 can be displaced downwardly into the position shown chain-dotted by a small axial force or by gravity. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the gear lever (7) is retained in the support (9) by a spring-loaded ball lock or detent (8) which may be released by a large axial force on the lever (7) such that it can be displaced downwardly as before. In a further embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the lower part (21) of the lever (7) is of cylindrical shape flattened on two sides and terminating in a ball (21a) positioned in the journal (22) for the shift-tube (23), spring-loaded detent plungers (25) engaging elongated grooves (26) in the flattened part (21), the grooves (26) extending longitudinally of the lever sufficiently to permit lifting of the lever 7 against the bias of a spring 28 for engagement of reverse gear, and having sloping ends 33 whereby again if the lever (7) is subjected to a heavy thrust or blow from above, the spring-loaded detent plungers (25) will be cammed back by the sloping ends 33 of the grooves so that the lever can be displaced downwardly as before. The lever may be restored to its original position simply by lifting it back to its correct position.
