1276966 Amine derivatives of ortho-nitrostyrene; indoles F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 20 Nov 1970 [24 Nov 1969] 55314/70 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R 1 , R 2 are each H, C 1-7 alkyl, Ph, OH, C 1-7 alkoxy, Ph-C 1-7 alkoxy, PhO, acyloxy, CHO, PhCO, HOCH 2 (possibly Ph-substituted), CO 2 H and its C 1-7 alkyl esters, CONH 2 , halogen, NH 2 (possibly mono- or di-C 1-7 alkyl, monocarbo-C 1-7 -alkoxy, Ph/carbo-C 1-7 -alkoxy, acyl or C 1-7 alkyl/acyl substituted), di-C 1-7 alkylformamidino or di-C 1-7 alkoxy-methyl, each Ph being optionally substituted, or R 1 -R 2 is C 1-7 alkylenedioxy; R 3 , R 4 are each C 1-7 alkyl or R 3 -R 4 is C 2-5 alkylene, provided that at least one of R 3 , R 4 is not Me when R 1 =R 2 =H, or when R 1 = H and R2 = 3-Me. These compounds (including those excluded by the proviso) are prepared by condensing R 1 /R 2 substituted onitrotoluenes with R 2 R 4 NCH(0R<SP>1</SP>) 2 where each R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-7 alkyl, possibly substituted PhCH 2 , or cycloalkyl, or together are C 2-5 alkylene, and may be treated with a reducing agent to give the corresponding R 1 /R 2 substituted indoles.
