1276496 Puffing tobacco CARRERAS Ltd 29 July 1969 [5 July 1968] 32237/68 Heading A2C [Also in Divisions H1 and H5] Tobacco is subjected to a high frequency electric field to cause the cellular structure of the tobacco to expand and/or to cause the fibres to move apart from one another. A suitable apparatus for treating the tobacco comprises a conveyer belt made from a material of low dielectric loss factor, a fixed electrode above the conveyer and an adjustable plate electrode below the conveyer. A high frequency current, supplied to the electrodes, is pulsed by interrupting the current supply to a high frequency generator by means of a relay system actuated by a magnetically operated reed switch the closing magnetic field for which is interrupted by rotating metal arms fixed to a geared output shaft of a synchronous motor. Suitably two interruptions, and hence two high frequency pulses, are provided per second. The tobacco may be in the form of whole leaf, threshed leaf, mid rib stem, cut rag, or tobacco made up into cigars or cigarettes.
