Abstract

1275808 Acetone purification FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 20 Oct 1969 [18 Oct 1968] 51374/69 Heading C2C A process for the distillative purification of crude acetone obtained by the direct oxidation of propylene with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst solution containing a compound of a noble metal of Group VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table and a halide of a heavy metal occurring in at least two valence states, the crude acetone having been separated from by-products having a boiling point below that of acetone, comprises distilling the crude acetone and withdrawing acetone from the distillation column at a position situated at from 4 to 10 theoretical plates below the head of the column while maintaining the ratio of product to reflux to the top of the column at approximately 1:7, recycling from 95 to 99À5% of the overhead product, after cooling, to the top of the column and simultaneously withdrawing by-products having boiling points above that of acetone from the column at a position situated at from 1 to 7 theoretical plates above the point of inlet of crude acetone. The high-boiling by-products may be subsequently distilled in a second column, the ratio of reflux to discharge being in the range of from 5 : 1 to 0À5 : 1 and the acetone distilled off is recycled to the supply of crude acetone optionally together with the remainder of the overhead product from the main distillation column. The Specification also describes suitable apparatus for carrying out the above process.
