Abstract

1275629 Explosive forming H HERTEL 25 Aug 1969 [25 Sept 1968] 42310/69 Heading B3Q Apparatus for forming work 16 against a die 18 in an enclosed liquid-filled chamber by means of a shock wave comprises elements 1, 2 forming the chamber without seals and at least one of which is movable by the forming pressure to open the chamber and relieve the pressure, means being provided for maintaining the chamber full of liquid until opened by the forming pressure. As shown, the shock wave is produced by an explosive cartridge 13 and the chamber is kept full of water by a pump 9. The chamber is guided on rods 3 and supported on springs 8. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the chamber is lowered into a water tank and has passages (27), through which it is filled from the tank, and a top vent (15). Hydraulic cylinders (23), operating lifting abutments, raise and simultaneously open the chamber. A vacuum conduit is connected to the die by a flexible hose (29). In another form, Fig. 3, a water tank 36 for the die-chamber 1, 2 may be emptied into a side tank or tanks 34, 35, or one remote from the tank 36. Water may be transferred by pumps 31, displacement bodies in the side tanks or by making the tanks relatively movable vertically. Non-return and slide valves 32, 33 are provided. The tank is protected by a flexible, gas-filled ring 28 which may also be formed to act as a spring for the chamber assembly.
