Abstract

1275114 Eddy-current disc brakes KNORRBREMSE GmbH 1 Oct 1969 [2 Oct 1968] 48308/69 Heading H2A An eddy-current disc brake, for motor vehicles, comprises two coaxial rotary brake discs 1, 2 between which are two coaxial axially spaced magnet wheels 4, 5 each comprising an assembly of permanent magnets 7 so arranged one after another with their magnetic axes extending circumferentially around the wheel axis that adjacent poles N, N; S, S, of each pair of adjacent magnets are of like polarity, and one wheel 4 is displaceable relative to the other wheel 5, about their common axis, from the braking position shown wherein the permanent magnet fluxes pass through the brake discs to a released position (Fig. 2) wherein the fluxes passing through the discs is reduced. In the embodiment shown, wedge-shaped ferromagnetic polepieces 7<SP>1</SP> are provided between each pair of poles, the wheel 5 is fixed with respect to the vehicle frame, whilst the wheel 4 is displaceable by an hydraulically-operable piston- and-cylinder device 6 articulated to the two wheels, and the discs 1, 2 are arranged on a rotary shaft 3.
