The invention comprises dioxazine dyes of the general formula wherein R 1 is a benzene residue which contains a sulphonamide group which may contain substituents other than tertiary amino groups, R 2 is an aromatic residue which may contain substituents, e.g. sulphonamide, halogen, alkyl, acyl, aryl, acylamino, nitro, cyano or cycloalkyl, and the O and N atoms are vicinal to each other and each Y is H, halogen or a non-ionic substituent. They are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula where X is H or a substituent which is replaced under the reaction conditions with a compound HO-R 1 -NH 2 to form an intermediate of general formula which, with or without isolation is then reacted with a compound HO-R 2 -NH 2 . Preferably X and Y are Cl or Br, HO-R 1 -NH 2 and HO-R 2 -NH 2 are the same where R 1 and R 2 are benzene and the reaction is carried out in an organic solvent in presence of a dehydrating agent and optionally an acid acceptor and/or a cyclizing agent, the reaction being completed at 120‹ to 125‹ C. The dyes are used as pigments to dye or mass colour viscose, cellulose ethers and esters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyesters, lacquers, acetyl- or nitro-cellulose and natural or synthetic resins.
