Abstract
1,274,499. Stabilized polyphenylene oxides. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 19 Aug., 1969 [20 Aug., 1968], No. 41432/69. Heading C3R. Polyphenylene oxides are stabilized by mixing them with a hindered monophenol of formula where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrocarbon groups and X is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group or the group where R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrocarbon group and m is 0, 1 or 2, or a hindered bis-phenol of formula where one of R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group and the other is a hydrocarbon group, R<SP>6</SP> is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group, A is an alkylene group and n is 0 or 1, or a hindered tris-phenol of formula where R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are as before and Y is a trivalent hydrocarbon group, or of formula where R<SP>7</SP> is a hydrocarbon group and R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> are hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups. There may be from 0À005 to 5% by weight of hindered phenol mixed with the polyphenylene oxide. In examples a poly-2,6-dimethyl- 1 ,4-phenylene oxide is mixed with various hindered phenols. Uses.-Sheets, films and other shaped articles.
