1,274,272. Naphthalene derivatives. SYNTEX CORP. 21 May, 1969 [30 July, 1968], No. 54042/71. Divided out of 1,274,271. Heading C2C. Novel 2 - (5<SP>1</SP> - Y - 6<SP>1</SP> - methoxynaphth - 2<SP>1</SP>-yl) - propylene oxides, where Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom, are prepared by reaction of a 5 - Y - 6 - methoxy - 2 - acetylnaphthalene with dimethyl-sulphonium methylide or dimethyloxosulphonium methylide, and may be heated, optionally with Lewis acid to give 2-(5<SP>1</SP>-Y-6<SP>1</SP>- methoxynaphth - 2<SP>1 </SP>- yl) - propionaldehydes, which are novel when Y is a halogen atom and may be oxidized to give 2-(5<SP>1</SP>-Y-6<SP>1</SP>-methoxynaphth-2<SP>1</SP>-yl)-propionic acids, which are novel when Y is a bromine or iodine atom.
