A driving arrangement for a roller 1, such as a bearing roller being tested for surface defects, consists of a friction wheel 2 and a series of supporting elements 3 distributed over the surface of the roller, each element being provided with a series of aerostatic or hydrostatic pressure sources. Similar end supporting elements may be used to hold the roller in the desired axial position.
