A typewriter comprises two typewriter mechanisms each having a corresponding keyboard, a first, master, mechanism A-B ineluding carriage escapement mechanism 6 operated by a universal bar 1, the second, subordinate, mechanism B-C being devoid of escapement mechanism but including a universal bar 1 which operates the escapement mechanism of the master mechanism, through a linkage comprising a shaft 7 and arms 9, 10.
