Abstract

1,273,739. Trawling nets. E. J. P. WOOD. 21 Jan., 1970 [19 Nov., 1968], No. 54803/68. Heading A1A. A fishing trawl comprises a net of fine mesh having a mouth (1) Fig. 1, (not shown) across which there extends a net of coarser mesh to prevent fish above a certain size being caught in the net. The trawl mouth is kept open in rectangular shape by two side otter boards 2 attached to the adjacent upper and lower corners of the mouth by lines 3 and 4. Floats 7 along the upper edge of the mouth and weights 8 along the lower edge assist to keep the mouth open. In an alternative arrangement the mouth may be defined by a rigid frame. The finer mesh net has a converging section 10 and a generally cylindrical "cod" portion 11 at the mouth of which is a frusto-conically shaped valve 12. The method of elver fishing in a tidal river consists of a trawling operation carried out in mid-stream against the incoming tide, preferably at night when the elver swim closer to the surface of the river and with the upper edge of the trawl mouth at a depth of about 12 inches to avoid floating debris.
