Abstract

1,273,622. Settling plant. PATERSON CANDY INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 12 June, 1970 [11 April, 1969], No. 18743/69. Heading B1D. A settling plant comprises a clarified liquid chamber 1 with overflow outlet 9, a raw liquid chamber 2 with agitator 7, a system of settling tubes or channels 3 joining the two chambers for the deposition in the tubes of suspended matter during the passage of liquid from chamber 2 to chamber 1, and a movable distributor 5 which supplies raw water selectively and cyclically to each of a plurality of groups, e.g. vertical columns, into which the tubes are divided. The raw water flow from the distributor acts both to supply the raw water to chamber 2 and to wash into the chamber 2 sediment deposited in the tubes. The concentration of solids in chamber 2 is regulated by bleeding the solids therefrom. The settling plant may alternatively be in the form of concentric circular chambers 1 and 2 having an annular system of tubes being disposed between them in which case either the tubes and chambers are fixed but the distributor is mobile and rotates in a circle around the inner wall of the chamber 1 (Figs. 4 and 5 not shown) or the two chambers and the distributor are fixed and the annular system of tubes rotates (Figs. 6 and 7 not shown). Several specific forms of distributor are described.
