Abstract

1,273,576. Explosive compositions. IRECO CHEMICALS. 23 Sept., 1969 [1 Oct., 1968], No. 46720/69. Heading C1D. In order to control the density of slurry explosive being pumped into a deep bore-hole, a gas generating, substance is added to the slurry at a controlled rate such that the proportion of gas generated decreases from the bottom to top of the bore-hole. For example, small bubbles of oxygen are introduced by adding hydrogen peroxide together with a decomposition catalyst to a slurry containing ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, water, guar gum, borax, and an insoluble sensitizer and/or fuel, such as gilsonite, bituminous coal, sulphur, or aluminium powder. Suitable catalysts are KI, MnO 2 , ferric nitrate, and ferrous sulphate, with or without manganous sulphate and hexamethylene tetramine. The rate of introduction of hydrogen peroxide may be reduced grandually as filling of the bore-hole proceeds. Introduction of a higher proportion of aerating agent into the slurry at the bottom of the bore-hole counteracts the increase of density and loss of sensitivity due to the pressure head of the slurry and the stemming. In place of the hydrogen peroxide, a CO 2 -producing agent may be added. Apparatus for pumping the slurry into bore-holes and regulating the amount of gas generating substance is described with reference to drawings. Specification 1,273,577 is referred to.
