Abstract

1,273,540. Variable speed control. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. 12 June, 1969 [14 June, 1968; 24 July, 1968], Nos. 28469/68 and 35355/68. Heading F2D. [Also in Divisions G2-G3] A control system for a fuel injection engine and a variable ratio transmission comprises an engine driven centrifugal governor 44 which acts on a fuel control lever 2 to increase fuel flow to the engine when the engine speed decreases and thus tends to maintain engine speed within a predetermined range, and additionally acts on a valve 16 to reduce the transmission ratio when engine speed falls below a selected speed within or below the predetermined range. The governor 44 is loaded by a spring 62 connected to a lever 58 which adjusts the spring load to vary the engine speed range. As shown the variable ratio transmission comprises a variable displacement pump 4 supplying pressure liquid to an hydraulic motor or hydraulic ram. The pump displacement is varied by an hydraulic servomotor 6 loaded by a spring 9 towards a pump minimum displacement position. The pump displacement is increased by pressure liquid supplied to the servomotor 6 from an engine driven pump through a restrictor 15 at a pressure determined by the variable throttle valve 16 controlled by the governor 44. An additional valve 69 reduces the pressure of the liquid supply to the servo motor 6 and thus the pump displacement when the pump delivery pressure exceeds a predetermined value. A by-pass valve 18 in parallel with the throttle valve 16 is opened to reduce pump displacement to a minimum during starting. Operation.-When the engine speed is above the selected value the throttle valve 16 is closed and the pump 4 operates at maximum displacement, whilst the governor 44 acts on the lever 2 to increase fuel supply to the engine when the engine speed decreases and vice versa. As the engine speed falls below the selected value the throttle valve 16 is progressively opened to reduce the pressure supply to the servo motor 6 and thus reduce pump displacement. When the engine speed is below the predetermined range the engine works at maximum fuel injection. If the pump delivery pressure exceeds a predetermined value the pressure acts on a plunger 72 of the valve 69 to move left a valve spool 74 and reduce the pressure supply to the servo motor 6 whereupon the pump displacement and thus the pump delivery pressure are reduced. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the pump displacement is adjusted by a spring centred double acting servo motor (81) and a forward-reverse valve (93) is interposed in the line (13) between the throttle valve (16) and the servo motor (81). In addition to the governor control of the throttle valve control lever (34) the lever is connected through a lost motion connection (101) to a lever 98 which may override the automatic control and open the throttle valve 16 to provide hydrostatic braking. The hydrostatic transmission may be replaced by a steplessly variable friction gear. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,035,821.
