Abstract

1,272,768. Purifying thionyl chloride. ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. 30 July, 1969 [30 July, 1968], No. 36274/68. Heading C1A. Thionyl chloride is purified in a fractionating column into which elemental sulphur is also introduced and in which a " substance containing iron " is also present. The " substances containing iron " are compounds containing iron as a cation (e.g. ferrous and ferric salts) iron oxides, compounds which will react under the conditions in the fractionating column to yield such salts or oxides, and also metallic (e.g. cast) iron. The sulphur may be introduced to the column in solution in an inert solvent (e.g. thionyl chloride). Before fractionation the thionyl chloride may be heated (e.g. in the reaction vessel in which the thionyl chloride is formed) with sulphur, sulphur monochloride (S 2 Cl 2 ) and a " substance containing iron " to remove sulphuryl chloride from the thionyl chloride.
