Abstract

1,272,619. Electrolytic apparatus. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 14, 1970 [May 15, 1969], No.24919/69. Heading C7B. An oxygen-free aqueous liquid is produced from an aqueous liquid containing dissolved oxygen e.g. water by electrolysing an aqueous electrolyte e.g. NaOH or H 2 SO 4 solution in an epoxy resin vessel 8 to evolve hydrogen on a surface of a cathode which comprises conductive material diffusive to hydrogen, preferably a U-tube made of Pd or alloy thereof e. g. 30% Ag : 70% Pd, and separates the electrolyte from the aqueous liquid containing dissolved oxygen, whereby the evolved hydrogen diffuses through the cathode and is retained in the aqueous liquid e.g. flowing through the U tube, and effecting reaction between oxygen dissolved in and hydrogen retained in the aqueous liquid to convert at least all the oxygen into water, e.g. by passing it over an activated Pd, Pt, Ir, Ru, Os or Rh catalyst supported on activated granular carbon. The apparatus comprising the electrolytic cell and reactor may be used in combination with apparatus for detecting or measuring the concentration of oxygen in an aqueous liquid which uses an oxygen-free aqueous liquid to calibrate the apparatus e.g. as described in Specification 806, 918.
