Abstract

1,272,095. Electrode structure. ENERGY CONVERSION Ltd. 12 March, 1970 [21 March, 1969], No. 14879/69. Heading H1B. An electrode structure particularly for a fuel cell or a metal/oxygen (air) cell comprises a layer of electrochemically catalytic material for reaction with a liquid electrolyte located on one side of a layer of hydrophobic material, preferably P.T.F.E., permeable to gases and substantially impermeable to liquid electrolyte and a layer of vapour permeability control material located on the other side of the hydrophobic layer, the whole arrangement being such that the evaporation rate of the layers is less than 0À12 grammes per hour per 20 sq. cm. The said control material may be emulsion paint, unplasticized microporous polyvinylchloride, porous filter paper, porous nickel sheet, inorganic particles plus a binder, e.g. TiO 2 -filled paint, sintered ceramic sheet or porous felts, organic or inorganic.
