Abstract

1,272,076. Foamed polypropylene filamentary materials. SALEEN G.m.b.H. & CO. 1 Aug., 1969 [3 Aug., 1968], No. 38603/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Foamed polypropylene filamentary materials consist of a foamed stereoregular propylene polymer mixture which consists of a relatively low proportion by weight of one or more heptane-soluble, low molecular weight propylene polymers having an average molecular weight not exceeding 100,000 and selected from propylene homopolymers, copolymers and graft polymers, and a relatively high proportion by weight of one or more higher molecular weight propylene polymers selected from stereoregular propylene homopolymers, copolymers and graft polymers as the main constituent, optionally admixed with one or more further low molecular weight and heptane-soluble polymers compatible with the propylene polymers, and having an average molecular weight not exceeding 100,000. The propylene polymer mixture may be formed by gas phase polymerization and may still contain catalyst residues. The foamed stereoregular propylene polymer mixture may have an average molecular weight above 600,000 and may be derived from a non-foamed propylene polymer having the following parametres: (a) number average molecular weight Mn of 125,000, (b) a weight average molecular weight of 1,151,000, (c) a distribution of molecular weight (#Mw/)#Mn - 1) of 8.2 and density (before being formed into filamentary material) below 0.90. The average molecular weight of the foamed stereoregular propylene polymer mixture may be from 700,000 to 1,200,000. The filamentary material may consist of a propylene polymer mixture having a wide distribution of molecular weights and consist of from 5 to 35% by weight of heptane-soluble, low molecular weight propylene polymer material containing atactic and isotactic fractions having an average molecular weight of 10,000 to 100,000, together with from 95 to 65% by weight of higher molecular weight stereoregular propylene polymer material. The filamentary materials may be formed by extruding a mixture of the polymers and a 5-10 carbon atom liquid hydrocarbon as the expanding agent at a temperature between 170‹ and 220‹ C., and stretching the extrudate as soon as it issues from the extruder die without heating or compressing the extrudate. The extrudate may be stretched at a stretch ratio of from 2 : 1 to 18 : 1, preferably to 16 : 1.
