Abstract

1,271,824. Ultrasonic inspection devices; acoustic couplings. ELECTRONICS RESEARCH CO. Ltd. 30 Sept., 1969 [1 Oct., 1968], No. 47929/69. Headings H4D and H4J. Efficient acoustic coupling between a transducer and a hot steel plate being inspected ultrasonically for flaws is achieved by the use of a steel coupling member in contact with the plate surface. In the embodiment shown for a pulse-echo inspection of a steel plate 1 transported by table rollers 3 and backing roller 11, one or more transmitting and/or receiving transducers is(are) disposed in a hollow steel roller 7 and is(are) supported on a pedestal from the fixed axis of roller 7. The pedestal acts both as an acoustic delay member and as a lens for focusing the transducer beam on the plate surface. Roller 7 is forced against plate 1 by hydraulic or air jacks 5. Oil acting as both coolant and couplant (between the pedestal and roller) is passed through roller 7. To reduce disturbing noises due to heat shock as roller 7 contacts plate 1, roller 7 may be pre-heated to the plate temperature. Graphs demonstrating the feasibility of using a steel coupling and showing ultrasonic attenuation (derived using an oscilloscope and calibrated attenuator) for various contact pressures between a transducer probe and hot steel test-piece are given. In a modification for inspection by a throughtransmission method using pulsed or continuous wave ultrasonic energy, a second hollow roller containing a transducer is disposed contacting the lower surface of plate 1.
