Abstract
1,271,105. Substituted polycyclic hydrocarbons. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 April, 1970 [9 May, 1969; 22 July, 1969], Nos. 23778/69 and 23779/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] A process for making polycyclic hydrocarbons involving intermediates having a basic formula where n = 0 or a whole number produced by an addition reaction between cyclopentadiene and (a) a norbornene of formula (b) an acyclic substituted olefin of formula X-C=C-X<SP>1</SP> where X, X<SP>1</SP> may be the same or different, i.e. H, halogen, OH, acetate, carbonyl, carried out preferably at elevated temperature and pressure, possibly using a catalyst comprising a strong acid, nitrogenous base, transition metal or a complex thereof particularly a rhodium complex. In the examples given: (a) vinyl chloride or acetate is reacted with cyclopentadiene giving norborneyl chloride or acetate which is reacted with isoprene, butadiene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, or piperylene to yield intermediates from which HCl or acetic acid can be eliminated to give a polycyclic hydrocarbon. In another example vinyl chloride is reacted with dicyclopentadiene to yield an intermediate containing two 1:4-methylene bridges. Examples are given wherein n = 0, 1 or 2 and X is halogen.
