Abstract
1,270,896. Incinerators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 18 Sept., 1970 [27 Oct., 1969], No. 44557/70. Heading F4B. A preferably horizontally disposed incinerator is pneumatically fed with comminuted waste from a tangentially disposed inlet line 20, which passes through its refractory lined side wall 28 at a position somewhere between mid-way and an end wall 26, to produce vortex combustion within the incinerator combustion chamber 22. A controlled quantity of hot or cold secondary air may also be tangentially introduced from fan 40. Solid free combustion gases are discharged through a removable axially disposed flue 44 which projects inwardly of end wall 24, and is provided with an encircling or slightly overlapping baffle 66, whilst particle laden gases from the outer edges of the vortex are extracted via one or more tangentially disposed discharge ports 60 and passed to cyclone separator 72. In a modification (not shown) the or each port 60 may comprise a scoop connected to a conduit passing through the end wall 24. Clean gases from separator 72 are passed tangentially back into chamber 72 by fan 78 or the fan 40. An access door (not shown) and an ignition burner 38 are provided in and adjacent end wall 26. The waste may comprise paper, peanut hulls, cartons, sawdust, wood scrap, garbage, foliage, floor sweepings, bottles, can, oils, paint sludges or plating tank residues. Preferred dimensions and operating conditions for the incinerator are given.
