Abstract

1,270,865. Tubular films; extrusion. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 29 Aug., 1969 [30 Aug., 1968], No. 43079/69. Headings B5A and B5B. A tubular film casting and orientation process comprises the steps of (a) extruding a molten thermoplastic polymer through an annular die, and (b) melt-drawing the tubular film so formed over an internally cooled mandrel having a portion of reduced outer diameter immediately downstream of the die, introducing helium gas radially of the mandrel and adjacent in a zone between the die and the plane of initial quenching in a direction toward the interior surface of the film and circulating the gas in the zone, the temperature of the helium being substantially below the film temperature in the zone. The helium may be removed radially at a location closer to the annular die than the location of helium introduction, thus providing a helium flow counter-current to the movement of the tubular film. The polymer may be polyethylene or polypropylene. The pressure of the helium in the zone may be sufficient to resist neck-in of the film. The plane of initial quenching is the plane perpendicular to the axis of the mandrel defined by the circumferential touch-down point at which the tubular film first contacts the mandrel as it is drawn thereover along its length. As shown, a tubular film 10 is drawn from the swollen molten polymer ring 11 which is extruded from the annular die 12. The internal quench mandrel 13 is provided with internal cooling means (not shown) and has an undercut portion 14 extending from the leading edge 15 of the mandrel to the ring 16 round the mandrel at which the tubular film first contacts the mandrel. The mandrel is supported on the face of the die 12 by the post 20. Helium at a temperature substantially below that of the portion of the film adjacent the undercut portion 14 of the mandrel enters the zone between the plane of initial quenching 16 and the die 12 through inlet duct 21 and radial helium entrance ducts 22. Volatile components present in the polymer diffuse readily through the helium in the zone and condense on the undercut portion 14 of the mandrel. Absorbent packing 23 may be provided to absorb the condensate and exit ducts 24 and 25 are provided in the support post 20 to permit the helium to flow through packing 23 and out through the ducts 26. The packing 23 is supported on baffle plate 27 and an insulation disc 28 may be provided to cover the face of the die 12. The production of polyolefin films is exemplified.
