Abstract

1,270,801. Pattern recognition. EMI Ltd. 21 May, 1969 [6 March, 1968], No. 10816/68. Heading G4R. Input apparatus for a pattern recognition device comprises a first pick-up tube (e.g. vidicon or flying-spot scanner) for scanning a predetermined area, a plurality of further pick-up tubes for scanning different portions of the predetermined area, and means responsive to signals from the first pick-up tube for selecting a region of the predetermined area and for passing to the pattern recognition device signals from the or each of the further pick-up tubes scanning the selected region. As described, the pattern is postal code on a letter to be sorted. At a pre-scan station, a pick-up tube feeding an analyser locates the lower right portion of the address (which presumably includes the postal code) and selects one (or more) of a matrix array of pick-up tubes at a second station to which the letter is conveyed to feed the scanned signal to a pattern recognition device controlling a sorter. The fields-of-view of the pick-up tubes in the matrix may overlap so that the whole postal code occurs within the field of one of them. Embodiments are described using lenses, mirrors, screens and flash-tubes to reduce the number of pick-up tubes for a given number of selectable fields, by energizing a selected flash-tube as well as selecting a pick-up tube, a given tube seeing more than one field of the letter but only one of these being illuminated. In the case of flying-spot scanners, selection of a flash tube is replaced by selection of a photocell.
