Abstract

1,270,644. Azo dyes. M. A. CHEKALIN, N. F. NIKOLAEVA, K. M. SIDNEVA and V. P. BOINO-BODZEVICH. 30 April, 1970, No. 20826/70. Heading C4P. Reactive azo dyes containing no auxochromic amine or oxy groups attached directly to an aromatic nucleus have the general formula wherein Ar<SP>1</SP> is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus and Ar is a naphthalene nucleus; R<SP>1</SP> 1 and R 1 independently are hydrogen atoms or or groups with the proviso that R 1 <SP>1</SP> and R 1 are not both hydrogen; R1 2 and R 2 independently are hydrogen or chlorine atoms or NO 2 , SO 3 H, CO 2 H, CF 3 , CH 3 , SO 2 NH 2 , SO 2 NHCH 3 , SO 2 CH 2 CH 2 OH or SO 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 OH groups; R 3 <SP>1</SP> and R 3 are hydrogen atoms or -N =N-Ar<SP>11</SP> or -N=N-Ar<SP>11</SP>-N=N-Ar<SP>11</SP> groups where Ar<SP>11</SP> is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus having substituent groups R 1 and R 2 as defined above, and n is 1, 2 or 3. The dyes are prepared by reacting sodium sulphite with a diazo compound of the general formula to form a diazosulphonate, and reacting this with a diazo compound of formula or alternatively forming the diazosulphonate of the compound of Formula III and reacting it with the diazo compound of Formula II. Symmetrical dyes may be obtained by reacting one mole of sodium sulphite with 2 moles of a diazo compound of Formula II. Diazo compounds which do not contain an active group SO 2 CH 2 OSO 3 H or SO 2 NHCH 2 OSO 3 H but contains a group SO 2 CH 2 CH 2 OH and/or SO 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 OH groups may be used as starting materials and the product treated with concentrated sulphuric acid, preferably without isolating the dye. The dyes give yellow, orange and brown shades on protein fibres e.g. wool or silk, and leather, cotton or viscose.
