Abstract
1,270,129. Protective arrangements. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 21 April, 1969 [22 April, 1968], No. 20291/69. Heading H2K. An arrangement for detecting an earth fault on a D.C. circuit, comprises an auxiliary circuit connected by diodes 8, 9 to the conductors of the D.C. circuit, an A.C. supply 3 connected to a rectifier 6 in the auxiliary circuit so that direct current derived from the supply 3 will flow in the auxiliary circuit when an earth fault occurs on the protected D.C. circuit, and a relay 10 responsive to the current taken from the A.C. supply when the fault occurs, the arrangement being such the relay is not subjected to the entire fault current from the protected D.C. circuit. In the arrangement shown the rectifier 6 is a bridge rectifier and the relay 10 is connected by a further bridge rectifier 11 to a transformer 5 on the A.C. side of the rectifier 6. The relay 10 may have a restraining bias provided by a further rectifier 13 connected to the A.C. supply and it may control a circuit breaker or an alarm or indicator. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the relay 10 has two windings and the bridge rectifier 6 is replaced by a balanced rectifier/resistor bridge, so that current from the D.C. network has no effect on the relay and the current drawn from the A.C. source by the relay may be used to give a measure of the insulation resistance.
