Abstract
1,269,979. Coating apparatus. FUJI PHOTO FILM CO. Ltd. 10 June, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 29452/69. Heading B2L. [Also in Division D1] Variations in the thickness of a coated layer applied to a moving web are negated by deriving an electric signal from disturbances which act to cause such variations, amplifying the signal and subsequently applying it as a potential difference between the coating compositions and the back of the web being coated whereby a varying and compensating electrostatic force of attraction occurs between the composition and the coating device. In Fig. 1 mechanical vibration of the apparatus is detected and converted to an electric signal at 7, which may be a capacitor-type vibration meter. The signal is polarity-reversed at 8, has its phase shifted at 9 and is amplified at 10, the output having a bias voltage applied thereto and being applied between the coating device 4 and the web 1 by electrodes 13, 14. As shown, the metal roller 3 carries an insulating layer 2. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a multilayer coating is applied, and variations in the uncoated web thickness are measured and fed, via a time-delay device, as an amplified p.d. between the coating device and the web, as in Fig. 1. Different disturbance factors may be simultaneously detected and combined to produce an aggregate correcting p.d. Other types of detectors are specified.
