A fabric layering or folding machine comprises a reciprocatable layering or folding carriage 1, a follower device 10 coupled to the carriage 1 for movement therewith and adapted to support an operator, and safety means 14, 18, 19, 16, 23, 24, 25 coupled to the driving means for the carriage 1 to stop the same when the operator is absent from the device 10 or when the device 10 encounters an object or a person in its path of travel. In a layering machine, the carriage 1 driven by a motor 5 reciprocates over a table provided with a plate 2 and is guided by rollers 4 running on a beam 3. The carriage 1 also runs on wheels 4a engaging the edges of the plate 2. The fabric is drawn by a roller 6 from a batch roll 7 and passes to a cutting device 8 which severs the fabric at the end of each lay. The device 10 is guided on the beam 3 by two rollers 9, Fig. 2, is coupled to the carriage 1 by a pin 11 and comprises a platform 13 on a vertical plate 12. A shaft 18 is mounted in transverse slots, Fig. 3 (not shown), in bearings 20 and is urged away from the plate 12 by springs 19. A roller 14 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 18 and bears against a rail 15 on the layering table. When an operator stands on the platform 13, the device 10 tilts to cause the driver rod of a switch 21 to move against the lower end of the shaft 18 and switch on the motor 5. In a modification, Fig. 4, a part 16 of the platform 13 or the whole platform is tilted downward by an operator against spring tension to actuate a switch 22 to start the motor. The ends of the platform 13 are provided with bumpers 17, Figs. 1 and 5, each connected to the platform by a lazy tongs or lattice extender 23 urged into its extended condition by a spring 24. An actuating bar 25 is fitted on each bumper 17 and a cam 26 on its free end actuates a switch 27. The distance between the bumper 17 and the platform 13 is limited by an abutment 28 operating in conjunction with a stop 29. When the bumper 17 contacts an object, the extender 23 contracts against the spring 24 and actuates the switch 27.
