A photographic camera has a film receiving chamber 7 for film 15 entering from a supply spool by way of a film gate, wherein arranged in the receiving chamber are two circularly bent leafsprings 8, 9 which act only upon the film edges and serve to assist the formation of a film roll, and a catching device for the film tongue consisting of a freely rotatably mounted spindle 12 and at least two curved arms 14 attached to the spindle, the concave surface of the arms facing the direction of entry of the film tongue, the width of the arms being equal to or greater than the distance between the springs and the edges of the arms forming the film roll core protrude slightly beyond the circle described by the leaf-springs in the region between the springs at the beginning of the winding operation. Segments (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), inter-connect the arms to provide lateral guidance of the film tongue. A hinged, transparent lid 18 closes the receiving chamber independent of the position of the camera back 6.
