[Also in Division A4] Means for dispensing a liquid, e.g. liquid fuel, comprise prepayment means on which a customer can preselect one of two or more monetary settings according to the monetary value inserted or an attendant can select a maximum setting on changeover from automatic to manual, and at least one pump for dispensing liquid up to a maximum governed by the monetary setting selected on the prepayment means, or to the maximum setting, when on manual. The or each pump is provided with means which may be set by the prepayment means to a setting spaced from zero, the control means then moving back to zero during dispensing, and stopping the pump when zero is reached. The monetary setting may be affected by retractable, as by a solenoid, pins 43, 47 which lie in the path of a first cam (37) (Fig. 4, not shown), carried by a layshaft 9; and zeroizing means are provided to return the cam to zero upon manual de-energization of the control means before releasing the pins. The maximum setting is affected by a fixed stop (45) also lying in the path of the cam (37). The prepayment means may be housed in a central console, to control a number of separate pumps, or may control a single pump and be accommodated in the same housing. The prepayment means may accept coins or currency notes.
