Abstract

1,268,407. Lasers. FERRANTI Ltd. 6 Nov., 1970 [12 Dec., 1969], No. 60657/69. Heading H1C. The partially transmissive output mirror 10 of a laser provides both a main output beam 14 and a focused secondary output beam 15, each output extending along a different path. The main output beam comprises the major portion of the generated power, the secondary output being obtained by reflection between the non- parallel major surfaces 11, 13 of the mirror and used for monitoring purposes, e.g. by a detector located at the focal point 16. The distance of the focal point from the mirror may be reduced by using a concave reflector 17. The non-parallel major surfaces 11, 13 of the mirror may be either concave, as shown, or planar, the surface 11 being normal to the optical axis 12 of the laser, while the surface 13 has its centre of curvature (or normal in the planar case) on a line which intersects the optical axis at the surface 11 by a small angle such as 4 degrees. The power of the secondary beam is determined by the relative reflectivities of the two surfaces 11, 13. For a carbon dioxide laser the mirror may be formed of germanium.
