1,268,303. Carbonylation catalysts. SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 18 Feb., 1970 [20 Feb., 1969], No. 7748/70. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] A catalyst system comprising nickel iodide, pyridine and hydroiodic acid is used for the carbonylation of unsaturated compounds such as α-olefines, or thier precursors by the Rappe process. The molar ratio of pyridine to hydroiodic acid is in the range 8:10 to 10:8, the ratio of gram atoms of nickel to gram molecules of pyridine between 1:0.25 and 1:10, while the amount of nickel to total amount of material is in range 0.1 to 3% by weight not including the carbon mon oxide. Examples describe the preparation of carboxylic acids by the treatment of 1-hexadecene or an olefine from the cracking of paraffin wax.
