Abstract

1,268,271. Treating liquids containing solid matter. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 18 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 14108/69. Heading C1C. Liquids containing solid particulate matter are aerated in a chamber 14 and subsequently treated with bubbles of an oxygen-containing gas in chambers 24 which carry the particles to the surface of the liquid, the bubbles of air used in the aeration being larger than the bubbles of oxygen-containing gas. The liquid containing solid particles is passed through an inlet pipe 10 and a comminutor 12 into the chamber 14 in which it is aerated by diffusers 16 supplied with air from a manifold 22 connected to air blowers 20. The aeration causes the particles to follow a helical path in the chamber 14. After aeration, the liquid enters an airlift comprising a pipe 26 and a pump 28 connected to the manifold 22 and passes to the chambers 24 via a cleaning junction 32, conduits 36, (40), Fig. 2 (not shown), inlet boxes (42) and feed pipes 44. In the chambers 24, the liquid flows in series through compartments (46). The oxygen-containing gas introduced into the chambers 24 may be air forced through a diffuser or a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen generated by electrodes 50. The clarified liquid from the chambers 24 is passed through a conduit (54) into an effluent box 52 from which it is discharged via a pipe 56. A stopper 62 engageable with the inlet of pipe 56 and operable by a solenoid 58 and a timer controls the level of liquid in the box 52 and the chambers 24. Any solids deposited in the bottoms of chambers 24 are removed via pipes 53 when an airlift line 55 is actuated. When the level of liquid is allowed to rise in the chambers 24, liquid and the solids flow over a lip (66), Fig. 3 (not shown), into a digester 68 which is supplied with air from diffusers 70 connected to the manifold 22. The digester 68 has an outlet pipe 72 connected to an airlift line 74 which is fed from the manifold 22 via a line 76. The outlet pipe 72 returns liquid to the aeration tank 14. A hypochlorinator 80 may pass chlorine from a storage tank 78 into the chambers 24.
